Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine Hcl) Side Effects, Interactions, Warning

Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride is a white, crystalline tricyclic amine salt with the empirical formula C20H21N•HCl and a molecular weight of.

In rats treated with FLEXERIL for up to 67 weeks at doses of approximay 5 to 40 times the maximum recommended human dose, pale, sometimes enlarged, livers were noted and there was a dose-related hepatocyte vacuolation with lipidosis. In the higher dose groups this microscopic change was seen after 26 weeks and even earlier in rats which died prior to 26 weeks; at lower doses, the change was not seen until after 26 weeks.

Other reactions, reported rarely for FLEXERIL under circumstances where a causal relationship could not be established or reported for other tricyclic drugs, are listed to serve as alerting information to physicians:

As management of overdose is complex and changing, it is recommended that the physician contact a poison control center for current information on treatment.

Cyclobenzaprine Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant and works by blocking pain sensations. Includes cyclobenzaprine side effects, interactions and indications.

Extended release formulations are not recommended for use in elderly patients. Because most muscle relaxants and antispasmodic drugs can cause anticholinergic adverse events, sedation, and weakness, and because their effectiveness at doses tolerated by elderly people is questionable, cyclobenzaprine meets the Beers criteria as a medication that is potentially inappropriate for use in older adults. The manufacturer suggests an initial dose in the elderly of 5 mg, titrating slowly upward based on individual patient response.

Cyclobenzaprine, sold under the brand name Flexeril among others, is a muscle relaxer medication used to relieve skeletal muscle spasms and associated pain.

Some experts believe that cyclobenzaprine should be avoided in elderly patients because it can cause confusion, delirium, and cognitive impairment.

A rapidly absorbed form of cyclobenzaprine is being studied in the treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Peak benefit was found to occur on day seven of the treatment for all groups. In a study on the treatment of musculoskeletal pain treatment with cyclobenzaprine alone or in combination with ibuprofen, no significant differences in pain scores were noted among the three treatment groups.

As of 2015 the cost for a typical course of medication in the United States is less than US$ 25.

The most common effects of overdose are drowsiness and tachycardia.
