Drugs that are given by direct IV injection are said to have 100% bioavailability. Parenteral drug administration can be taken literally to mean any non-oral.

By administering directly into the systemic circulation either by direct injection or infusion, the drug is instantaneously distributed to its sites of action. Not only is the IV route inconvenient for the patient and practitioner, but it carries the greatest risk of any route of drug administration. In many respects the administration of medicines via the IV route is an admission that the use of other routes will not allow for an intended therapeutic outcome or goal of the treatment to be met.

In general the injection of drugs into the muscle or the adipose tissue beneath the skin allows a deposit or ‘depot’ of drug to become established that will be released gradually into the systemic circulation over a period of time.

Were inadvertently given an oral liquid medication intravenously. errors can still happen for another reason—a knowledge deficit about oral.

It might also help to affix an auxiliary label that uses a much larger font, such as the labels in Figure 2 marked “ORAL,” which are available from Baxa. However, with clear liquids, pharmacy technicians and nurses often have trouble seeing and measuring the liquid in an amber syringe when preparing the medication or administering a dose. To help address these problems, some hospitals use amber oral syringes for all oral liquid medications to further differentiate them by color from typical clear parenteral syringes.

We would dilute IV morphine sulfate with sterile water for injection to yield a concentration of 0.4mg per 1ml for oral use in Neonates. Other IV formulations of drugs can be given through the oral route. I just finished a rotation at a hospital pharmacy and I can think of at least one example.

60 children undergoing elective hernia repair under general anaesthesia were randomized into two groups: the study group (group A) was given oral midazolam 0.5 mg/kg (mixed in paracetamol syrup) and the control group (group B) was given just the paracetamol syrup before bringing them inside the operating theater. They were evaluated for ease of separation from their parents, ease of i.v. cannulation and induction, and for recovery time from anaesthesia.

It was concluded that injection midazolam mixed in syrup paracetamol administered orally is a convenient and efficient method of premedicating children undergoing general anaesthesia. Parent-child separation and induction of anaesthesia was smooth and the recovery uneventful in children premedicated with oral midazolam.
